Chapter Twenty-Eight
Bangkok, Thailand
A series of texts from Ramsay had taken King to the airport. Outside the airport, the usual throng of tourists, scamming locals, pickpocketing children, blatant prostitutes in various states of undress, vocal taxi drivers and street vendors made for a melee of chaos and noise. Fumes from vehicles long overdue services or scrapping filled the thick air with both noxious smoke and noise alike, a cacophony that was truly an assault on the senses. King had left his luggage at the hotel, but it was nothing that he couldnât replace. He always carried his passport, cards and cash, but he had to ditch the pistol and the knife in a nearby rubbish bin. He shrugged it off. If Hong Gil-dong and his escort were going to the airport, then it would only be to catch a flight, and King would not get past the security checks with weapons.
Ramsayâs messages had padded things out somewhat. Through separate investigations they had a name. King had confirmed it. Now they had a work history and more importantly, they had his date of birth. They also had the manâs first visa, which had been at the age of twenty-two, when Hong Gil-dong had entered America on a South Korean passport that was now regarded as almost certainly fake. The man also had American citizenship after ten years of official US residency. Hong Gil-dong was an artificial intelligence and cyber security specialist - an innovator, by all accounts - and Ramsay and his technicians on the floor below his office agreed that if Hong Gil-dong had not wanted to be found then they would not have found his breadcrumbs to follow. Everybody made mistakes, and thatâs what usually led to their downfall, but these little breadcrumbs of code were a cry for help. If they had not been, then the French nuclear power station would have had a catastrophic reactor meltdown. Which meant that the hacker had not been given a choice in the matter of the cross-channel ferry disaster, and for him to be assigned two special forces agents, then whoever was controlling him was worried about his level of commitment, and other agencies getting to him.
King snatched a baseball cap and a pair of sunglasses off a traderâs stand and handed the man too much money, not waiting for change. Donning both, he stepped through the automatic glass doors and found a money exchange which he sidled up to for cover as he studied the crowd. Standing in the middle of the check-in area would attract attention if Hong Gil-dongâs minders were on the lookout for him.
King scanned the people looking for features. Short to medium height, black hair. Two men and a woman. Once he found his groove - skimming over the white and black people, the tall and the stout, the blondes and the gingers â he found the Asian and Oriental people easy to identify. And there they were. The woman who had bundled Hong Gil-dong into the rear of the vehicle was at the Qantas check-in desk.
